The huge revenues are dead...but not software
Software will always be needed. I see it though as a situation in which a significant technology of our time has begun to mature.

Microsoft and their kind rode the wave of this technology and by doing so, they took in a lot of money and earned the title of "growth companies".

Their problem is that this "wave" is approaching shore and is about to flatten out. Of course, the software provider's don't like this idea, so they are eyeing the "subscription" (extortion) model. Basically just a means of forcing people to pay eternally for something they would probably not have purchased at all (i.e, useless and sometimes detrimental upgrades).

Certainly there are some situations in which a subscription model might be desireable, but not for most people. I'm thinking that as the big companies begin gouging people for subscriptions, smaller software providers, OSS and even shareware creators, will begin to fill the void of owned/licensed software.

The average Joe doesn't need a subscription. They just need something that takes care of basic tasks. If people start paying for subscriptions for all the different applications that are on computers these days, their current monthly utility bills will pale in comparison to the cost of their software.
