If the ROI isn't there companies will move to some-system where it is. Yet most aren't jumping directly into the thin-client, brains-elsewhere services described by the article. Rather, they're at the interim steps - 1) offshoring IT functions to markets where the current structure can be maintained on the backs of cheaper labour. 2) Reducing licensing costs by use of zero-cost software, which requires only a business purpose statement to be accepted. 3) Outsourcing support roles on software: help-desk, business liason, and so on for their purely COTs products again to raise ROI by cutting aggregate wages.

Will the ultimate end be the thin-client approach heralded by such companies as salesforce.com? Perhaps, but not for at least 7 years.
