Then their is the pay once always stay model.
Many shareware programs are pay once for a license and get upgrades for life. Of course, 'life' is the life of the company but that goes for all companies. How many of you use PeopleSoft and was not a little worried?

How many owned stock in PS and was not at all concerned?

The model is as good as it makes the customer feel. Some like not having to invest in servers, etc. Others feel unsafe without total control of their data or merely their data traffic.

How many feel okay with outsourced apps and Sarbane-Oxley compliance?

I told m boss that the Software assurance Program was a load a crock and I am glad that I did not go with it. No software upgrades, no assurance.

How many believe that if you took the utility model with MS servers that usage recorded will mostly be your own activity? Of course this is refering to server apps, not OS. Okay, SQL server utility? Who's buying? When the server hangs at 99% CPU usage and will not respond and you try everything to gracefully exit so as to preserve data, will you pay the bill for all that time?

Who trusts MS to give you credit for their bugs?

Just questions. It will work for some vendor/client pairs but not all. I do not think that the licensing is dead just that alternatives will strive.

I particularly like the subscritpion model but not for all things. Some utility models are great but I beleive only for the few who will benifit from high volume, turnkey solutions or extremely task-specific, high processing power needs. Sun and IBM have taken this bull by the horns.
