This is 100% right on!
The software industry has totally forgotten that they wouldn't be here if not for the consumer. Companies like Microsoft, Intuit, etc. act like the consumer exists because of them. Their arrogance has pushed many, with more on the way, to stop spending altogether. Forced upgrades which provide nothing beneficial to most business users, software that is dangerous to use, software that takes more and more resources to do nothing more of any value, and on and on.

If you think IT jobs are becoming fewer, software companies are going to experience the real brunt of the consumers unsatisfaction.

In the business world, nothing since Windows98 has offered any real improvement to productivity and efficiency to the desktop. Recreational users are a different story. But if not for the business sector funding this money pit called IT, you and I couldn't afford a PC for personal and home use.

Like I have said many times, technology's future will not be decide by the IT industry but by the balance sheet of companies who purchase IT. NO MATTER WHAT, when a company is not getting positive returns on their investments, the investment activity failing to perform will be excised, IT included. This is a simple economic fact that every successful entity must follow, or they will soon become unsuccessful. PERIOD!
