What is better for the consumer?
Vily,

First of all, the only people to whom computers being better
doesn't matter at all are people who don't think they deserve
better things in life. Thank goodness not everybody thinks that
way, otherwise we would be a human race who settles for
mediocre things and there would be no German cars, no free
nations in the world, no Stradivarius violins (all of which at a
certain point accounted for 3% or less of their kind, but are the
best in their class).

On the other hand, you might be right. If you prefer quantity
over quality; if you prefer being the biggest and making the
most money over being smaller but making the best computer
OS; if you'd rather use an inferior product just because it's the
industry standard, then yes, I guess it doesn't matter if OS X is
better.

Second, you think Bill Gates knows how to run his business
better than Steve Jobs these days? Do you know how many iPods
has Apple sold since their introduction more than a year ago?
Over five million (90+% of the market share of hard drive music
players). That's about twenty iPods per security flaw discovered
in Microsoft products. Do you know why Microsoft seems to be
doing worse and worse each day? Because in reality Bill Gates
(the visionary) doesn't run Microsoft anymore, but Steve Ballmer
(the salesman) does. That explains why their market share has
grown while each version of Windows keeps getting worse.

Third, you think MS is better for the consumers? I hope you're
keeping your PC's virus protection updated at least twice a day
or you probably might not be able to reply to this message next
time you try to use your computer (god forbid you catch a nasty
virus). Oh, and the wise folks from CNet also don't recommend
you use Internet Explorer to visit ZDNet. Oh, and please don't
use Outlook to read your e-mail, as thousands of viruses hide as
attachments aiming at Outlook. Oh, and don't use Windows
Messenger if you connect to a network. A hacker could take over
your PC. Oh, and if you plan on installing the latest Service Pack
from Microsoft, be careful since it creates many incompatibility
problems with many applications. So remember to back up and
encrypt your data first. Oh yes, I forgot XP doesn't come with an
encryption engine like OS X.

Fourth, about your monopoly theory, it comforts me to know
that most US States and the European Union know much better
than you what the concept of the word "monopoly" is. That's why
they haven't opened anti-monopoly legal processes against
giants like Sony (Japan's best TVs), Virgin (Europe's best airline
and music mega stores) or Apple (best digital music distribution
company). Oh, but I forgot, to you it doesn't matter if these are
the best.

And while Microsoft scrambles to spread a new security patch
while explaining why most versions of Explorer just won't block
pop-ups, OS X users download a new track from the iTunes
store while burning a DVD with their family vacation movies, and
Linux users have fun distributing a new cool application they've
just designed.

Do the right thing like all the people who've switched to Firefox
or another alternative browser. They sure know who is better for
the consumers.
