Okay, so We're moving to Linux...**
Now we use Lotus Notes. That already runs under Linux so e-Mail is nothing new.

Plus my users are already used to the web interface to the Domino server --they use it everytime they are not in the office and need to check mail-- so that won't be new.

They use The GIMP under Windows so that won't be new.

We have two inhouse apps. SQL back ends, web front ends. Those won't be new.

Word, Excel, PPT. Okay. So they have to learn OOo. Eveeryone whom I have introduced it to took to it like a duck to water. The only people that didn't take to it are the ones who never took to MSO2k. How surprized are you at that?

So will they need training? No more than what they will need if we stay MS and go to [LongHorn|WinXP] with [Office2003|OfficeXP].

Therefore, cost of training will not be a factor of comparison in migrating although there is a cost involved.

One forum member spoke previously about their migration to Linux and the biggest question was, "what version of Windows is this?" The only way of saving money for us is to stick with Win2k and MSO2k for the next five years.

With middleware and Java apps, migration is only a problem for people who bought into the MS proprietary programing model of total integration.

Clearly from the article, Paris is trying to move away from that even if it doesn't mean going to Linux. Hence, a move to Linux or *BSD five years from now will be even less painfull.

** "We're moving to Linux," is hypothetical but the senario is real for us. We can migrate that easily if we had to and I did introduce many to OOo with the stated reactions.
