How HP does it
HP-UX routes EVERYTHING though the kernel - in this way you can be assured of the fastest response. It does work, HP workstations are about 20% faster than Sun workstations at the same Mhz. The downside of this is that kernel programming is much more involved and tricky. This is why HP-UX was still using ONC v1.2 for their NFS - while Sun was using ONC v2.3 - You just can't rev your OS very fast when all code needs to be rewritten for the kernel.
