There is a large body of prior art out there. Sun settled because financialy it was the prudent thing to do. Uncertainty about java would have cost them a lot more if they were in court for a few more years apealing this decision. They appearantly didn't even bother to show prior art in the case so you might even wonder if there are some alterior motives at play here. All the big guys are now covered by liscences. Care to make a guess who's going to be in trouble here? The little guys that can't afford to pay enormous laywer bills.

Sun was about the only big player not covered with a liscence so there realy was nobody else to spring a lawsuit on. If you read the patent almost every programming language is infringing and that's just stupid. The US patent office is obviously sleeping and just rubberstamping ANY patent that is applied for. I realy hope they sober up here in Europe and do not follow the US example. That way this madness stays with it's inventors in the US.
