Ballmer's worry over StarOffice
Ballmer claims that StarOffice is only as good as Office was years ago. In some measure, that is true. But what Microsoft just does not seem to get is that that is enough. Microsoft Office 97, in my opinion, was the pinnacle of Office suites - you just don't need anything else out of a Word Processor, Spreadsheet, and Presentation program.

And now that StarOffice and OpenOffice have reached the capabilities of Office 97, and added the one feature Office should have gotten in all those years (direct PDF export), the value proposition is quite compelling. Why pay big software rental fees, if a free product that may not be quite as good just happens to be good enough?
