I call your 2Cents and raise you 2Cents
"They need to focus more on the back end work on
managing the desktops that they want to push out before
they can even consider challenging microsoft in that arena."

Perhaps like Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP), Sun's Java
desktop, Novell's ZENworks, RedHat's Stateless linux, PXE
Boot, or perhaps you wish to support your own with local
apt or yum repositories?

"I evaluate software and solutions where I work, and one of
the biggest drawbacks is the fact that opensource software
seems to change too quickly raising the total cost of
ownership in maintenence on most installations."

Just because a given project comes out with a new version
doesn't require you update to it! Apache 2 doesn't make
version 1 any less safe, version 2.6 of the linux kernel
doesn't mean you throw out version 2.4 installations. With
full source you can support any version well beyond a
company's or community support finishes. Even the *free*
Fedora project has 18 months *free* support via the Fedora
Legacy Project, Debian even longer.

"It actually costs more per installation of Redhat ES or AS
than it does for an installation of win2k or win2k3(not
counting client licensing for microsoft, even though it is
usually done on a per seat basis in most large
corporations)"

Client licensing is not an issue? Then I suppose the IE
update and reboot for a windows fileserver is not an issue
either? SP2 didn't cause you any headaches?

You compare ES and AS server versions with windows
server and where exactly does the included windows tools
shine?

Do we count the ability to lock down a computer or
malware attacks?

Open source isn't the bees knees for everything but I'd be
interested in a specific example of where windows TCO
advantage is obvious.
