Can I belive this gem?
"Novell plans to release in early November a new version of
its open-source operating system for desktops."

No this is not the same as MS plans anti-spyware, SUSU
Linux 9.2 will ship in early November and pre-orders are
being accepted on their website.

"The software is based on Linux kernel 2.6.8"

Thousands of improvements over the ever-reliable 2.4
series kernel, specifically I/O, VM, scalability and driver
model improvements.

"This is the second update of the operating system to be
released this year."

Such is the rapid pace of open source development multiple
releases per year is fantastic. Why would anyone want to
wait 5-7 years between versions? Of course you're not
forced to upgrade if you don't want to.

"The package comes bundled with development platforms
such as KDevelop, Eclipse and Mono, for open-source users
interested in working on Linux as well as cross-platform
applications."

What, development tools included? Sure beats having to pay
for it as an add-on. The distro also includes dozens of
other programming languages and tools.

"Other features include greater security via automatic
activation of a firewall after installation..."

Hopefully one of those stateful inspection firewalls the
windows security architect was recommending on ZDNet
windows users buy at an additional cost. Why yes it is!

"...and the KDE 3.3 and GNOME 2.6 graphical desktop
environments."

Two GUIs? Actually more if you want to really tailor your
system for performance with one of the lightweight window
managers.

"The product will be priced at $89.95, including 90 days of
installation support. An updated edition for existing users
and a student edition will be available for 59.95."

This is about the cost of a windows users annual anti-virus
subscription! Exception value, especially with the
thousands of other apps included, such as OpenOffice
1.1.3, Apache, The GIMP, Spam-assassin, Evolution 2,...

Of course if you're don't see the value for the money the
free Fedora Core 3 will available early Nov (currently 1st).
You won't get the excellent support from Novell, however
community support is available. You've nothing to lose with
open source:-)
