..While many of us may have wished XML and Web Services would just go away...

Why?
If you don't want to use it then don't use it.
I like WS for both desktop and browser apps and the results usually impress other developers and end users.

It is messy at the moment but I have faith that a good standard will result.
Half way in or half way out of that swamp?
