.NET = microchannel?

A couple of comments:

I was an IBM hardware designer in the early eighties and designed a fair number of devices for both (E)ISA and MC.

The ISA structure was dead simple to design to, but it was slow and resource-limited (e.g., IRQs). MC was designed to overcome the problems of ISA and did a _great_ job of it -- it was a lot faster and had fewer limitations -- but it was a real bastard to design to. MC really was a Good Thing, but it was probably overkill for what most HW designers thought a PC would be good for. Most, I think, just didn't want to invest in the effort of designing to it for no apparent gain for their function over the simpler ISA. In light of the evolution of ISA's successors, I think you could make a good case that MC was just ahead of its time, not "redundant research".

I'm not sure, however, that .NET is being designed to solve any problems other than Microsoft's. It centralises things in an era when the cost of HW is low, suggesting that DE-centralising is the way to go. It adds complexity to the design of SW apps in an era when the apps are already getting beyond the ability of all but the best programmers to design and maintain them.

Huge, monolithic, kitchen-sink, apps stomp all over the KISS principle, and it shows: security holes, low reliability, etc. App design needs to become _less_ complex, not more so.

My advice: Just say no to .NET
