Client recomplexity...
The focus now in .NET is eliminating client complexity. The ultimate goal (which Microsoft has made great strides toward) is to provide the richness of the thick client model with the ease of deployment and administration of the thin client/web model. What Microsoft has found is that the web model does not scale nearly as well as the thick client model. Probably the closest to the truth is that Microsoft does not advocate a thick client or a thin client model, but a thick client-thick server model. This is the "Smart Client" model they are now trumpeting. On the back end is a web server, but on the front end is a thick client.
