.NET, "hailstorm" et al -- the names are hints
.NET is hard to explain because it is one of those Microsoft insider-joke names for what outsiders call Embrace Extend Extinguish.

The clue is in the ironic naming conventions the cocky MS has used post-MS trial when it knew it had the Bush DOJ on its side--Hailstorm, Net, Longhorn. Product codenames that could hardly imply a meaner tone toward the to-be-roped-in, stunned-to-the-ground, and loooooong horned customers.

Of course .NET needs constant re-explaining as it it is only about stuffing core functionality of Windows into a new code base that eclipses the possibility of web-based distributed computing or at least ensures that "Windows" is necessary for whatever computing strategy that might try to compete with desktop Windows. It also in effect tends to obsolete Windows 98 and earlier (and even Win2K in some cases), as we are seeing now in some new utility program upgrades that require .NET and which don't function on Windows 98 or earlier at all.

.NET thus brilliantly "integrates" planned obsolescence AND preobsolesence in that it heads off potential new off-Windows paradigms such as "web" or "utility" computing in addition to snuffing earlier Windows users.

Naturally MS is now pooh-poohing the idea of utility computing--as we are only to do that within the MS NET.
