You said it exactly
"it all seemed to pointing backwards at recomplexifying the client. Well, I like to think of myself as open minded, but somebody has to explain why this would be a good thing."

M$ computing will become old fashioned. As we are seeing, the industry is looking to simplify computing through thin clients and computers that only perform specific tasks, instead of the all-in-one solution (a la Microsoft). Some of the things M$ is looking to do with Longhorn just seem ridiculous (and no Bit, I haven't previewed it, and I could care less about your NDA). Merging the browser and a database into the OS seems nice but it really is for nothing more than to completely eliminate third party software in M$ land. They want to eliminate google, adobe, symantec, all other browsers, oracle, etc...gimme a break already! This will be their last ditch attempt to hijack the world of computing and lock it into a vault. But they are doing their age old proprietary lock-in scheme at a time when the industry is no longer inextricably tied to them and is no longer beholden to them. M$ STILL thinks they run the show. Their arrogance in thinking that it is still 3 years ago is going to do more damage than any OSS thingy. Blowhorn will be overwhemlingly bloated, have EVERY app which will of course be impossible to shut down or remove, and every other task performed will be trying to dial 600 different M$ servers. Two years from now IT managers are going to take one look at this crap and just laugh in M$'s face. They'll say "do I really need an IM, a browser, a database, spyware, and who-knows-what-else when all I need is a fax machine?? I think I'll just set up a free linux box, strip it down to what *I* want, and save a dumpload in cost, licensing, etc."
