Damn, I wish I could write as well as you do. You've always shown yourself to be open minded and intelligent. I try my best to put my admitted mistrust of MS aside when making a judgment, but it can be difficult. In saying that I honestly believe the very problem with .NET and most of MS's ideas is that they are made with "what is best for their wallet" not what is best for the industry. This problem will crop up in any company because that is what they exist for. I have no solution past saying open source is a little safer because it's not so "wallet driven". I think we need to stop and consider this when making any decisions concerning a new technology. Why was it created, will it help my bottom line, or is it just another salesman's smoke screen.

Another related force I have found difficult to deal with is the non-tech person in a higher position. I recently had a higher up request and get office XP for the simple reason of it being new. In the end it provided nothing new for him, he has become more difficult to support and it's taking him time to learn the changes they made. In the end the new technology reduced our productivity as a group and even did some damage to his, due to learning.
