.NET = microchannel?
Now before all the hair triggers go off here, let me be clear that this is a question rather than a value judgement. It's just that I recall clearly when the basic PC architecture began to settle in, one company invested heavily in redundant R&D in an attempt to take it off in another direction, and nobody benefitted from that endeavor. Mr. Stein makes the point the way I see it; we have an emerging base to work with and the productive contributors are those who innovate on top of the base, rather than standing in the way.

I'll confess to being one of those "suits." Right now my organization has four major modernization programs underway at a price tag in the hundreds of millions of dollars, in addition to evaluating COTS to meet the financial and HR requirements. Our CIO office has identified more than a dozen technologies of potential use for the future, and I am tasked with aligning our laboratory facilities with the evaluation demands. But guess what. Even with a goodly number of hobbyists on the various panels, nobody has so much as suggested we look at .NET.

I read Mr. Carroll's article through several times trying to glean a sense of direction regarding Longhorn and .NET, but it all seemed to pointing backwards at recomplexifying the client. Well, I like to think of myself as open minded, but somebody has to explain why this would be a good thing. We're busy paring the staff of that army of low-grade techs we used to deploy all over the campus just to keep things running. If Microsoft/Carroll has an alternate model, they should speak up before we are fully committed the other way.

A suggestion here. Maybe Ballmer should get off the podium. He just doesn't inspire confidence. Maybe find a modern day Carl Sagan to explain what all this stuff is about and how we as stewards of our corporate resources should consider using it.
