I agree...

Microsoft is, and always has been, the poor
man's/non-technical man's alternative to more
robust (and in the past, more expensive)
solutions.

UNIX is better than Windows. Historically this
has been accepted as fact. But Windows was
much, much chear, and it ran on cheap x86
hardware -- and cheap rules in business. With a
free version of UNIX, known as Linux, which runs
on inexpensive hardware (x86), MS is facing a
loosing battle.

sqlserver and the rest continue to dominate."

Continue to dominate? MS owns the desktop
market. They get thrashed in the enterprise
market. UNIX owns the lions share of the server
market, and that share is expanding (thanks to
Linux). Java also owns the enterprise software
market. MS doesn't dominate anything in the
enterprise. They are lucky to even be there.

I totally agree with your point about ease of
use and low cost for MS products. You must
realise though that Linux/Java and open source
are going to get easier and easier. They
already are cheaper.

UNIX + Java + Oracle dominate now, and are
expanding that dominion at a stagering rate.
Keep the facts straight.

Please do some jobs searches and see for
yourself how many Java, UNIX, and Oracle jobs
there are compared to C#, Windows Server, and
SQL Server jobs.

MS has a place, but like you said, its place is
small potatoes.
