Truly witty post! The LockNet monster lives!
.NET is hard to explain because all it IS in fact is a lockin mechanism designed to head off web based computing and "utility" computing, two closely related animals that like Netscape and Java threaten to leap the "applications barrier to entry" as ole Judge Jackson of MS Trial fame put it.

"Windows Domination", key Windows OLE code was stuffed into IE to make IE essential, thereby killing off any user energy left to bother picking up Netscape (with Java).

Now, on today's episode of "Own the Whole Dang Internet," .NET is merely a way of nominally seeming to do web apps idea while in reality making it MS-essential that such apps require an MS OS and MS Office.

Get the point, people: .NET can only be explained as the migration of the Windows APIs into an artificially-essential runtime that guarantees that we will all use Windows or its successors no matter where we try to go today, tomorrow, and long[horn] into the future.
