I Like Java But...

if you are developing web-based apps for the vast "middle market" of corporations of the world - small/mid-size retailers, service organizations, small/mid-size manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers... etc.. .NET is the way to go.

sure, java is more "open" and more scalable across various platforms. but guess what, unless your dealing with a fortune 500 company or a small tech outfit that probably develops their own stuff in-house anyways, it doesn't matter.

The reason microsoft thrives is the same reason the "purists" bash it - it's integrated. Office, server, database, xml, .net. For better or worse, companies buy into the complete package knowing that pointing and clicking will solve 99% of the problems they may run into.

It may not give them the lighting fast algorithmically optimized java solution that only folks like Citigroup and JP Morgan have the money to build for themselves.

But it works.

Big clunky, overly integrated, platform lockin -- all true.

but also -- cheap, easily deployable, point and click maintenace, fire and forget installations. THIS is why .Net, Office, windows 2003, sqlserver and the rest continue to dominate.
