Ummm, Ya...
You're right. .NET doesn't recomplexify the
client any more that Java does. .NET doesn't
force a thick-client. And .NET is much easier
to use than the awful win32 API.

But .NET doesn't provide any significant
advantages over Java, and in fact it drags with
it some significant disadvantages. .NET does
equate to Microsoft lock-in. Java doesn't lock
you into anything. Sun doesn't own Java. Java
is an open standard with many competing
implementations of that standard. Java runs on
all platforms -- including Windows. It just
makes good business sense to use Java.

I suppose you could argue that ASP.NET is good
stuff. But I guess I could argue that the sky
is green. Java on the server-side is
unmatched. .NET has no chance of competing with
Java in the enterprise. .NET has made its
debut, made its splash, it has been out for
years, and still there are 2x as many Java jobs
as there are .NET jobs. Java is the #1 in
demand programming skill -- and the only IT
skill that is more in demand than Java is UNIX.
Hmmm... Java and UNIX (aka Linux) are the most
in demand skills and growing at an astounding
rate. I truly hope you take this fact as a
wake-up call for your current alligences and
existing skill set.

Java + Linux is the present and the future.
This isn't Linux-hippy wishful-thinking. This
is hard capitalistic facts staring you in the
face. I emplore you to do a few job searches on
Dice.com, Monster.com, etc.

Freedom is good, dictatorships are bad.
Businesses can figure this out even with really
cool super-bowl commercials from Microsoft
playing at every turn.
