Java...
I agree with all of what you are saying as far
as modern application managebility, but Java
does all of these things and you have the
freedom to choose any OS including Windows.
There is no need to upgrade from 98, there is no
need to migrate to Linux. But if you choose to
do so (what business doesn't want to migrate to
Linux?), Java is still there. You mention the
ease of distributing .NET applications and then
point to the issues with older versions of a
Java JVM. This is a non-issue. Java, for some
time, has had a program called "WebStart" that
automatically updates your JVM and uses the
correct JVM for you application. Furthermore,
you can deploy your app to a web server and the
client just clicks a link and WebStart will
automatically download the app, update the
client's JVM if needed, and runs the app. Every
time you run the app it quickly checks to see if
there is an updated version and other nice
features.

.NET is not a bad technology, it's just that it
doesn't provide any compelling advantages over
the competition, and drags along several major
disadvantages. .NET does equate to MS lock-in.
Java doesn't lock you into anything. The Java
trademark is owned by Sun, but that's about the
end of it. Sun doesn't own Java. Java is a
standard with many competing implementations of
that standard. Java is freedom -- and price
negociating leverage. Smart businesses will use
Java... Wait! They already are: #1 in-demand
programing skill in the industry is Java -- 2x
as many Java jobs as .NET jobs and growing.
