In many cases, POS systems are not just for stores. We use a LAN based system in many colleges as it's the only way to go. Try centraly locating a server on campus with the POS's in other buildings. Think of the cost of running brand new lines and infrastructure to make this happen. If the building is across town, do you bury your own lines? It's a register system. The reason they must be linked, and real time, is that the students purchase, either on a decline or incline account. If their is 10.00 on their card at breakfast, and they use 9.00, it must show that at the next building, otherwise they can spend more than they have 20 minutes later.
No, using it across the school's network is the only way it can be done realistly in many cases.
