CAD will replace it.
In all likelyhood, they didn't build a clay model, rather they printed one.

3D modeling is quite easily going to replace blueprinting, if only for the fact that it can do exactly the same thing as blueprints -- and more. They can call up a 3D model of a structure at home base, and print it in 3D using a variety of commercial 3D printers around. They could use and label all of the 3D objects used to coincide with their real-world counterparts, the possibilities are truly endless.

I don't think lugging a PC around construction sites will be very kosher, but that's why we invented laptops, which are getting cheaper by the day. Will carpenters be looking at the laptop to know where to put each nail? No... but I don't think they look at the blueprints to do that either.

CAD is quite literally the way of the future. It will result in fewer human errors in buildings, thus reducing accidents. It will result in a more efficient building design, thus reducing construction time. I feel that the super-architecture envisioned for the future can and will be possible only with CAD.
