True, they did build 1 clay model of the 2005 GT-40, but they only needed 1. The whole system was done in virtual space: the wiring placement, turning the front A-Arms to accomodate the space available (180 degree turn), etc. The majority of automotive design (and much of the parts fabrication) is now donw initially in virtual space. You can take the design and run it through a milling machine to fabricate a part from raw aluminum (or whatever alloy you want/need). The design is still largely virtual, though!

That the 777 had issues during fabrication (just as the F-22 Raptor did, also done virtually) is just part of the process. The Aurbus A380 is going through that, also. Any plane that is built will need at least 1 mule (test vehicle), and cost issues happen! This does not remove the fact that the vehicles are designed in 3D (CAD) or that they only need 1 or 2 test vehicles before they go live (production) after using the CAD systems.

Paper is ok but it is needed less now (except by the older critters who have not adapted) than it was 5, 10 or 15 years ago! Just as the mainframe has not gone yet (they actually just got smaller, sans maybe an IBM S/390 or Sun E15K, both are huge!) it's place does get reduced as the capabilities in software and hardware increase.
