This IS a good move ...
The free software model is radically different in terms of the way IP is handled from the proprietary model. Neither side really seems to understand how the other side works. When the two come into contact, there needs to be a consultant available who is skilled in both venues.

However, to suggest that only 'open source' has IP problems is incredibly daft. Even this venture is not aimed at 'open source', its aimed at the interaction of the two models. And even the term 'open source' is a misnomer. There are proprietary products that are 'open source', but I assume that when you are talking about 'open source' you really mean 'free software' or 'FOSS'.
