They do need it

To run down all those close-source, proprietary companies that mischaracterize The GPL as public domain and liberally lift code from GPL licensed software.

In just the last year there were 3 or 4 instances of copyright infringement by proprietry companies perpetrated against GPL'd software. Can you name a single verifiable instance of copyright infringement by OSS of copyrighted code? C'mon bitty, just one?

Contrary to what you try to sell here, only proprietary companies are guilty of copyright infringement. Seems the GPL code is too good and the temptation to great to resist by closed vendors. They think that their infringements,or, in bittyspeak, thefts, will not be discovered because they keep the code hidden. Perhaps sometimes but often it is discovered.

Try again, bitty. That dog won't bark.
