The problem for Microsoft is Linux is good enough.
And in some ways better. Office is becomming so bloated and changes often enough that training is becomming very expensive. We do not need more features, we need a slicker simpler interface for the masses. Add to that, OpenOffice is good enough for the masses, and for those that need more, such as publishing, there are much better options.

So for the masses of workers that only need simple word processing, email. web browser, and company apps. Linux is looking better all the time.

Add on all of the costs for viruses, and Linux is starting to get irresistable.

Oh, and with J2EE so far ahead of .Net, you won't need Windows on the server.

About the only place where Linux will not penetrate in the near future is at home. But, that said, Lindows is comming on strong for the poeple that just want to do email, web, word processing, watch DVDs, etc.

And, the basic Linux kernel is already better than Windows and getting better faster. Really the only Area that Windows beats Linux is comercial applications, and once Linux has a critical mass, venders will be falling all over themselves to get a Linux version out. Well, all except Microsoft.
