Five years behind what?
The technology has been in continuous development and upgrade since the advent of networked computing. As a matter of fact, the technology and terminology of telecommunications is a direct derivative of the core technology, and this is a reason that the OS is so secure and efficient; it was designed from the outset to service the multiuser, multiprocessing environment.

Five years behind! So this is why the proprietary OSes are falling by the wayside? Why throw a meaningless statement out there?
