Here's the difference...
I just put a new machine together last weekend. Nice Win2k box, running an Athlon XP, really fast. W2k seems to run really fast and stable. Weds night I figured I'd get the net connection set up. No problem whatsoever. Dialed in, then first thing I did was go and purchase McAfee for download. Completed the download, then went to MS site to get SPs and security updates. Figured I'd download everything, disconnect, then install it all. Wanted to do this all right away before using the net much, so as not to be sitting out there risking virus infection or remote probing of the box. I never got the MS updates. Within the first hour on the net, the box was compromised by the W32/Nachi worm.

You want to talk about 5 years behind? My Linux box has never been compromised on the net, and I don't even run any AV software on it. This is not an issue of market share making Windows a more frequent target. It's about fundamental design flaws in the core modules of the operating system, configurations not being defaulted to the most secure settings, etc.

I'm no Linux guru or something. I'm a mere novice who's using it because I can see some trends developing behind it, and some advantages it has. No, I'm not sold yet on everything about it. But the real issue I have is no longer usability. It's easy enough to set up and navigate, and more stable and secure. The only impediment I still have with moving over completely is that not all the apps I need are there. That's a problem that time will cure. Meanwhile, I don't have to worry that my Linux box will be trashed the first hour I get on the net.
