I hate Swing too. I think it is why many get the impression that Java is slow. Swing is heavy on your machine and it seems to encourage you to program in the least efficient way possible.

Realistically Java is as good as C++, and in some places touches C!!!

Sun either needs to extend AWT, adopt SWT, or make a combo of them. People might not like the loss of garbage collection w/ SWT, but it isn't complicated (a method call), and is well worth the performance boost.
