What I'm Saying Is Not Propaganda
Either you are just passing on ignorant heresay, or you have an agenda.

There are many studies showing that java is comparable in speed to C++ and is in some cases actually faster. Here are a couple articles for reference.

I?m not ignorant, nor do I have an agenda. I?m just tired of people telling me Java?s speed is okay, only to find out otherwise. The last time I had a Sun JVM installed on my computer, it slowed down my computer as if it were adware. This happened after I visited a map site per the recommendation of a ZDNet UK writer, where I winded up loading Sun?s JVM and (maybe other Java components) onto my computer. It was bad enough that the map program wasn?t fast after the Java software was installed, the Java components substantially slowed down the overall speed of my computer. It was only after I removed the Sun JVM from my computer, that its speed was restored. I almost couldn?t believe it.

The first link that you gave me performed testing under ideal, non-real world conditions. This link explains for real apps, Java is much slower than C++. I find the explanation by the link I gave to be consistent with my own experience with Java on the desktop. Maybe you can get away with doing simple applications with Java on the desktop. However beyond that, Java is just too slow to be of much practical use.

The following is an excerpt from the link I referenced above:

The Benchmarks

Perversely, the only area in which Java can be as fast as C++ is a typical benchmark. If you need to calculate Nth Fibonacci number or run Linpack, there is no reason why Java cannot be as fast as C++. As long as all the computation stays in one class and uses only primitive data types like int and double, the Java compiler is on equal footing with the C++ compiler.
