Linux on desktop
There are many reasons why Linux is slower on the desktop.

1) the desktop is not part of the core (kernel) of the OS like in Windows.

2) Linux has less cohesion in shared libraries. Many Linux applications use large number of libraries, many of which are rarely shared. This means that Linux has to load these libraries when starting applications, unlike in windows where practically everything is based on the Microsoft standard libraries and have to be loaded only once during system startup.
