Actually...
Let's see, where did the IE browser come from? It was a copycat of Netscape.

Nope... Wasn't Netscape... From IE's About screen:

"Based on NCSA Mosaic. NCSA Mosaic(TM); was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Distributed under a licensing agreement with Spyglass, Inc."

Going further back, where did the IP stack in Windows come from? It was a copycat (rather bad one) of several available for other OS types.

Actually, all Internet related protocols - including TCP/IP, the IP stack, etc... are a result of RFC's that have been approved into standards by the W3C. Granted, MS may have done some reverse engineering, but the concept itself comes from standards...

About the only thing that I can think of that MS did not copy from others in the market is the total lack of security in their products.

Many of MS's current woes come from the fact that Windows was developed in a "kinder, gentler" era of the Internet. One where we didn't have hackers around every corner, spammers out to hijack any computer they can get their hands on, and let's not forget virii...

What started out as an era of relative innocence has degenerated into one where we have to be security concious. The level of dishonesty online has increased exponentially in the past 7 years.

So... MS now has to catch-up. Many of their better ideas (ActiveX) have been exploited and corrupted. They've got a lot of work ahead of them to get everything fixed...
