Actually...the hack could circumvent the dongle...
You would just alter the actual code that checks for the dongle. In other words, you would make the program (in this case the OS) think it is always getting a "true" response to the dongle being present and valid.
So, even if the dongle itself were impossible to crack and duplicate, the code on the computer wouldn't be.
This is the same way they do things like bypass the need for programs to contact the mother ship for activation, or where you bypass the need for an activation key all together and you can just put in a string of zeros or something instead of a valid code.
Lots of stuff is out there.

The idea of key cards work in the real world because people trying to bypass them (like spies, secret agents, other James Bond types) don't have access to the software behind the device they use the card on. So they need to bypass it at the card level.
What I'm talking about is beyond that.
