Microsoft in a catch-22
>> Once again, instead of competing on merit, Microsoft wants to just dump on a market instead of going to the actual trouble of making Windows more valuable. <<

Microsoft would LOVE to compete on merit.. but the fact is, when Linux costs $0, and the real version of Windows is quite expensive for people in the poorer countries, price is much more of a distinguishing factor than quality.

Microsoft doesn't have many options:
1) Offer full Windows at third-world prices. (Problem is, what's to prevent everyone else from buying these copies?)

2) Pull out of these markets completely (But Microsoft won't surrender to Linux..)

3) Enforce their IP rights - ie crack down on piracy. (This would have the same effect as 2.. plus many of these governments have more pressing problems than to deal with pirates).

4) Offer a crippled version of Windows at reasonable prices for the market.

None of these options are ideal.. ideally, everyone would pay the asking price for a piece of software, or use something else that costs less. Ideally everyone would have enough money to pay a just price for the software. But that's not the world we live in..
