MS should employ a dongle ...
MS should begin to employ a dongle or hardware key. That would stop a lot of piracy in its tracks. It would plug into a USB port and be tied to the Windows kernel. Without it you would be unable to do an install or boot the system. It would be shipped with the install disk as a sort of high tech keycode. It would be designed to self destruct if tampered with, just like a SecureID card. Such a device would certainly not put a total stop to piracy, but it would make it infinately more difficult. Obviously the current software key/product activation system that has been so ballyhooed simply is not working.

In any case, this is not the fault of Linux, as Gartner's report seems to imply. This is the fault of an OS that is so totally insecure, its vendor cannot even find a way to keep it from being freely copied. The ready availability of Linux PCs simply makes piracy a bit easier, but I have no doubt that dedicated pirates have never had a problem obtaining the necessary hardware to ply their trade.
