Novell bought the rights to Unix in 1993 and sold some of those rights to Santa Cruz Operation, known then as SCO. In 2001, Santa Cruz Operation sold them to Caldera, along with the rights to OpenServer and their reseller network. Shortly thereafter, SCO changed their name to Tarantella.

In 2002, Caldera renamed themselves The SCO Group, ostensibly to capitalize on the familiarity of the name "SCO".

The SCO Group frequently hides behind the "SCO" name as a ploy to fool those ignorant of history into thinking that they were major participants in the development of Unix. Nothing could be further from the truth.

See paragraphs 10 and 11 in IBM's Amended Counterclaims at http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20031102104937393&query=novell+USL+tarantella
