Thuinking about hardware costs, too.
You wrote, correctly, that there wouldn't be a big cost difference between top tier OEM costs for either XP starter or XP home.
But if XP starter can run on lower capability hardware than is required for XP home, then we could see very cheap Windows machines.

I'm guessing that Windows imposes certain hardware demands that put a floor on pc costs. Remove those requirements, get Windows pc's for less than $300. I suspect that's why WalMart is carrying a Linux machine.

XP starter was made to go on cheap machines for poor people. From that, I'm guessing the hardware requirements are lower.

If there's nothing missing most users need, why shouldn't Microsoft obtain what's essentially a new market?
