Good lord Martin, your talking about PCs.
Good grief, the IT industry didn't start with PCs. Here is a clue, IBM Systems/36. Do you know what OS you HAD to lease? Do you know what software you HAD to use?

Do you grock the concept that they went through anti-trust hell for 10 years and the ONLY reason the PC was an open architecture was because of the ANTI-TRUST actions?

As I said, unless your old enough to have lived it, you simply don't have any real point of reference.

Oh and by the way, have been following the news on how IBM screwed employees to the tune of $6 BILLION? Or the pregnant mothers they had working with very dangerous chemicals for YEARS after the chemical companies told them of the dangers? Or even the fact the union at IBM is fighting tooth and nail to get IBM to be honest about offshoring jobs?

You open source supporters see IBM using open source products and (temporarily) being an advocate of open source and it blinds you to everything else.
