Yes, IBM went from a sluggish hardware monopoly to a thuggish services and hardware company. If you thought IBM is interested in anything other than profits, you'd learn the hard way.

Doesn't mean that Microsoft's tactics in the past were any better, though I think the plotters at Microsoft had more fun than those at IBM because the schemes were more numble. But both were ultimately damaging.

Microsoft's single redeeming virtue is that Bill Gates likes software. IBM's single worthwhile aspect is that they invest in hardware research, and apparently get something out of it.
I think someday IBM will farm software to Microsoft, so everybody does what they do best. But that won't be until the rest of the industry has withered away. Both are doing what they can to eliminate the competition as quickly as possible.
