One major difference...
>>> I think one point is, IBM has shown that a once-abusive monopoly can indeed change its patterns of behavior. If IBM can do it, why assume that Microsoft can't? >>>

If I'm not mistaken, IBM was/is a corporate entity basically controlled by a "group" (execs, board, shareholders, etc.) that implements the corporate "philosophy and mindset" and not run by one strong-willed, all-powerful, influentia, "sick" individual.

Microsoft is basically Bill Gates (and perhaps Balmer in the background). Gates WILL NOT or CANNOT change. He's one who doesn't like to lose and has shown he will stoop to any level to achieve his goals (stealing computer time in college; (ironically) scamming IBM with an OS he didn't even have (or create) plus the "OS2 partnership" betrayal; scamming & threatening Apple (Mac GUI) and later with Quicktime; numerous "thefts" and double crossing of various people/companies over the years; the "kill Netscape" scheme; strong arming/threats of OEMs and others; etc.)

As long as MS IS Gates, MS may fake a change in behaviour (typical Gates scam) but it cannot truly change it's (his) ultimate behaviour, it's (his) mindset or it's (his) ultimate goal... control and win by whatever it takes, legal or otherwise.
