Actually...
...instead of "I know what's wrong, but I'm not going to tell you", it tells you exactly what to do. I have found a tremendous amount of help online, for when the message seems cryptic, such as how to install and configure a modem. The tar package actually had a "read me" file with the instructions in it.

And you are right about windows messages "I don't know what went wrong, and there's nothing you can do about it". Why doesn't the message just say "ha ha, you have windows, sucker".
