Specifications are rarely broken...
-- Specifically, the default setting of one-hour polling in RSS aggregators is broken. --

I agree with your comments, but I disagree that RSS is broken in *any* context.

A chosen specification for an IT implementation is either good or bad. RSS happens to be a good choice for *many* solutions. However, in cases where it performs poorly or fails to meet customer requirements, only the application designers can be blamed.

The MSDN aggregation approach can be improved in many ways that will cause users to believe (once again) that RSS is not broken. wink

More than 100,000 users are subscribed to the John Kerry News Reader (a custom Flash RSS newsreader). This application was created as a technology demonstration to see if (a) non-technical people would adopt an RSS reader, and (b) to see if we could scale an RSS application to a large audience. The 30+ blog feeds in the application are aggregated every two hours into a middleware space that then deploys to a static server farm. In this particular case, RSS is not broken, and the infusion of 100,000 new users is not impacting the individual blogs and their servers.
