What Microsoft did was try to destroy Java and make it incompatible.
But that is another story.

I think Sun could gain a lot by offering an open source version of Java. It would become the defacto standard in an instant, and probably all but kill C#/.NET. As it is, they are playing into Microsofts hands. And, Sun can still make a lot of money on hardware, they do not need to make money on Software. They can use that as a hammer on both Microsoft AND RedHat. Remember, Solaris is cheaper on x86 than Red Hat!

But, I love this competition between two great companies. They are both offering different choices, different visions. They are both competing on the merits based on open standards. Let's see what the customers buy.
