Red-Hat has been leveraging on large amounts of s/w that it didn't develop itself to create a 'business model' that is profitable. Granted there were many contributions by RH engineers to the Linux kernel (posix threads, etc.)

At the same time it wants to acquire a free pass to exploit a piece of s/w that SUN has invested 10s or even 100s of millions to develop. SUN was basing its viability on Java as a key technology. Although it is debatable if Java is the best or not, it definitely has great value as technology and as a competing force that stimulates other alternative approaches.

Nevertherless, RH is trying to grab a significant product for which it has contributed very little and start leveraging it for profit.

It is as if someone would demand that the IBM's Power 5 or Itanium 2' IPs can be used freely without giving back anything to the inventor and implementer. And although I usually take (justifiable ) jabs at MS office, I would consider a request for open sourcing it as next to absurd.

Well, he can ask as much as he wants, but I don't think that SUN should lose control of the Java completely.
