And very pointless
Khtml and Gecko are already very mature. If you RTFA you'd notice that it's the same clues that point to Google making it's own browser also point to google basing a browser off of the existing Gecko engine (that powers Mozilla/Firefox).

Not to mention that Google has close pretty strong ties with the OSS comunity, constantly touting their linux based super computer cluster, etc. They wouldn't want to piss them off by directly compeating with them. It'd be a horrible business strategy. Better to pull them in by creating another branch project with the Google name backing it up to help further penetration. I'd support a Gecko based GBrowser. And I'd tell my friends to try it or Firefox. They wouldn't even have to know right away that their the same wink
