Just imagine...
"We want to push Atrac on our music download services and remain convinced that it is the best format on the market,"

Suppose Sony Music wasn't the same company as Sony Electronics. Would they be using ATRAC? I doubt it. So aren't they making a bad choice because of corporate politics?

The only successful music download sites have the DRM turned practically off. So how about Sony take it one step further, sell music in MP3 with the ordering persons details embedded in it using some watermark method but no DRM. MP3 because its the most widely available format. (and MP3 VBR rates very highly on quality tests).
If/when the watermark is cracked, just change the method and don't tell anyone, and catch pirates next time round.
