they (Novell) had a decent product
Actually, it was not that great. Netware did not scale well, it was far too chatty for large networks. I once worked for a company that made remote access servers and we had to write proxies for their chatty network services so that they would not keep wan links up. Only Appletalk seemed to produce more network traffic than Netware.

I also remember the CNE's charging an arm and a leg for support that was sometimes marginal. It is an important point to remember, especially when the future of Linux is important to you. Novell likes to portray themselves as the defender of Linux, but they have not changed their stripes. Novell is not a company that I would trust if I were you, they are just trying to figure out some way to charge you the same high CNE prices for open source software. Generousity is not in Novell's corporate character. If they can't make the old CNE bucks on Linux then they will lose their interest in Linux.
